The County of Los Angeles is leading two significant initiatives to protect and enhance its coastal assets: a coastal resilience initiative and the “Marina del Rey for All” (MdR for All) project. These efforts aim to ensure equitable, inclusive access to beaches and coastlines while addressing challenges such as extreme erosion, rising sea levels, and high tides. MdR for All focuses explicitly on making Marina del Rey more welcoming for all residents, particularly historically marginalized communities. Through public access improvements and strategic real estate development, the county seeks to generate revenue while fostering a beachside community that reflects the county’s commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
The success of these initiatives will require coordinated engagement with various stakeholders, including local government agencies, community groups, private sector partners, and the broader public. FUSE Executive Fellow Duane Johnson will lead efforts to gather input through a listening tour, connect with inland and underserved communities, and develop a strategic communications plan to promote these initiatives. By facilitating transparency and accountability, Johnson’s work will shape ongoing engagement and media strategies, ensuring broad community involvement and laying the groundwork for long-term coastal resilience and inclusive development across Los Angeles County’s coastline.
